The Tamil Thendral was started in 2001 by the late Mr Nimal Lakshapathi Arachchi, the one-time Director-General of SLBC. His brainchild was THENDRAL. Then Tamil Commercial Service was renamed “Thendral“ to attract the young Tamil Listeners.
SLBC had the challenge to compete with private Tamil Channels. But couldn’t achieve the goal due to lack of proper administration of Thendral. Beginning of this service, some experienced and talented Announcers worked there. After some seniors went on retirement, the quality of this service dragged.
At the Beginning of Thendral, Mr N. S. Siva Raja was appointed as an In-charge of the channel, and later Mr Faouzul Hassan was appointed as director of Thendral. He did his best to uplift the quality and boosted the income of Thendral as well.
During that period, several senior Announcers worked. Mr Fauzul Hassan met with an accident on his way to Jaffna for a Thendral Promotion Musical show, and he was killed. After his demise, again, the Thendral dragged into the level of low.
